What Is Somatic Experiencing®?
Somatic Experiencing® (SE) is a body-centered therapeutic approach developed by Dr. Peter Levine over 50 years of clinical work and research. It is one of the most widely practiced and researched somatic modalities in the world.
SE is based on a simple but powerful observation: wild animals, despite being regularly threatened, do not develop trauma symptoms. Why? Because they complete their stress response cycles - they shake, run, breathe, and discharge the energy of survival.
Humans interrupt this process. We override our body's signals with thinking, social expectations, or sheer willpower. The result: survival energy gets trapped in the body, showing up as chronic tension, anxiety, hypervigilance, numbness, or a persistent sense that something is wrong.
How SE Works
SE works by helping your nervous system complete the survival responses that were interrupted during overwhelming events. It does this gently, without requiring you to retell or relive traumatic experiences.
Key Principles
- Titration: Working with small, manageable amounts of activation at a time - never overwhelming the system
- Pendulation: Moving attention between areas of tension and areas of ease, teaching the nervous system that it can visit discomfort and return to safety
- Discharge: Allowing the body to naturally release trapped survival energy through shaking, trembling, deep breaths, tears, or warmth
- Resourcing: Building internal and external supports that help you feel safe and grounded
What to Expect in an SE Session
An SE session looks very different from talk therapy. Instead of sitting and talking about your experiences, you will be guided to track physical sensations, notice subtle shifts in your body, and allow your nervous system to do what it naturally wants to do.
- Check-in: You and your practitioner establish where you are in your nervous system right now
- Tracking: You are guided to notice physical sensations - temperature, pressure, movement, tension, ease
- Resourcing: You connect with internal or external resources that support regulation and safety
- Processing: Small amounts of activation are explored, allowing natural discharge and completion
- Integration: The session closes with grounding and a sense of restored balance
